Three UK research teams have each received awards of between £1 million and £2m for healthcare technology from the Engineering and Physical Science’s Research Council.
The three projects are led by Newcastle University, the University of Bristol and the University of Warwick and involve 15 other universities as partners.
The Newcastle-led team will develop a prosthetic hand that can be controlled by the nervous system and the Bristol-led team will work on ‘smart trousers’ to help those with mobility impairments move unassisted. The Warwick-led team will develop disposable bio-sensors, which may take the form of temporary tattoos or smart watches to collect data on how patents use rehabilitative technology.
