Citizen scientists watch worms for the MRC

A citizen science project created with the Medical Research Council has achieved in 10 days what would have taken a lone researcher 20 times as long.

The Worm Watch Lab, led by Zooniverse, a citizen science organisation, asked members of the public to track egg-laying behaviour of nematode worms by watching short video clips. An initial target was set of 100,000 classifications in 10 days but the total number achieved was more than 150,000, and continues to grow.

André Brown, group leader at the MRC Clinical Sciences Centre in London said: “We are staggered with the response to the challenge of 100,000 classifications and it is a testament to the importance of involving lots of people in helping scientists to classify huge quantities of data.”
