Marine researcher to head NERC innovation board

Angela Hatton, professor of marine biogeochemistry at the Scottish Association for Marine Science, has been appointed chairwoman of the Natural Environment Research Council’s science and innovation strategy board.

Hatton’s research interests lie in the role of micro-organisms in the production and removal of environmentally significant gases, including the greenhouse gas methane. She is also a member of the National Oceanography Centre Association’s steering board and is one of 11 chairmen and chairwomen in NERC’s peer review college. She has been a member of the strategy board since 2013.

The strategy board is the main source of advice on science matters to NERC’s council, advising on the balance of the research council’s science portfolio. Hatton replaces Philip England, who was appointed chairman in 2012.
