STFC’s VELA accelerator officially launched

The Science and Technology Facilities Council has officially launched the Versatile Electron Linear Accelerator, which the council says can drive the use of accelerator technology by industry.

VELA is a modular injector facility that delivers a short pulse electron beam that can be used to test samples of materials, create images and test the operation of innovative accelerator components. The STFC says it has applications in areas such as imaging, radiotherapy and sterilisation in healthcare, as well as other industrial applications.

The facility has been in use since September 2013, but its official launch was announced on 13 March. Academic and industrial researchers attended the launch event to learn whether it could help them in developing market-ready technologies.
