The Academy of Medical Sciences has said in its submission to the Nurse review that the number and balance of the UK research councils remains appropriate.
The academy’s submission, published on 17 April, said that the research councils as they are currently structured “operate synergistically with other public funders, such as the National Institute for Health Research”. However, it added that collaboration across the research councils and between the councils and industry “remains an area for further improvement”.
Those improvements could be brought about by broadening the scope of existing interactions and through the development of a stronger relationship between the councils and Innovate UK, the academy said.
