Crop scientist appointed NERC science director

The Natural Environment Research Council has appointed Tim Wheeler as its next director of science and innovation.

Wheeler’s appointment was announced on 27 January. He is a professor of crop science at the University of Reading but has for the past six years been seconded to the Department for International Development as its deputy chief scientific adviser.

He will be replacing Iain Gillespie, who left the council in December 2015 to become pro vice-chancellor for research and enterprise at the University of Leicester.
