Research councils eye global challenges fund

Academies say fund needs independent chairperson

The chief executives of the research councils are discussing the possibility of making contributions from their individual budgets to the Global Challenges Research Fund, Research Fortnight has learned.

It is thought that their contributions, which would be in addition to the £1.5 billion that the government has committed to the fund up to 2021, would help the councils gain more control over the fund’s governance.
