Just 17 per cent of applications for research grants from the Economic and Social Research Council are funded, according to an analysis published by the council.
The ESRC examined application and success rates over the past five years and found that success rates for grants, including fellowships, were as high as 33 per cent in 2012-13 but fell to 17 per cent in 2015-16.
The success rates for responsive-mode grants, which accounted for about 25 per cent of all grants, were even lower, the analysis, published on 24 November, found. These ranged from a high of 25 per cent in 2012-13 to a low of 12 per cent in 2015-16.
