The United Nations has announced that the UK’s Centre for Ecology and Hydrology will manage a $60-million project to fight nitrogen pollution.
Mark Sutton, an environmental physicist at the Natural Environment Research Council laboratory in Edinburgh, will lead the project, which aims to “spearhead integrated management of the nitrogen cycle for clean water and air, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and better soil and biodiversity protection”, the centre said in a statement on 5 December.
The project is to be run by the centre on behalf of the International Nitrogen Initiative and will be funded by Global Environment Facility, an alliance of national and international environment agencies.
