Walport and Borysiewicz out of UKRI race

The government’s chief scientific adviser Mark Walport and the former head of the Medical Research Council Leszek Borysiewicz are not in the running to lead UK Research and Innovation.

Research Fortnight understands that Borysiewicz has withdrawn his application, despite being regarded by many as having a high chance of success. Walport is also not on the final shortlist.

Another strong contender, Nancy Rothwell, the vice-chancellor of the University of Manchester, is believed to not have applied for the job.
