The Natural Environment Research Council has published plans to create a new research centre to study the environment under the Earth’s surface in Cheshire.
The centre will be part of the Energy Security and Innovation Observing System for the Subsurface project ESIOS. It will work on low-carbon energy technologies such as renewable geothermal energy and carbon capture and storage.
The plan published on 15 July, says that the first site for the project will be located near Thornton in Cheshire, following suggestions from an open call for ideas on where to locate the site.
