Four universities are to open a joint centre, backed by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council and Innovate UK, that aims to improve the detection and management of communities of microorganisms that can damage equipment and threaten human health.
The National Biofilms Innovation Centre will be led by the University of Southampton, in collaboration with the universities of Liverpool, Edinburgh and Nottingham, working with industrial partners, the BBSRC announced in a statement on 28 November.
The centre will aim to overcome the challenges posed by biofilms. They attach to surfaces and often have corrosive properties that may impair the development and commercialisation of novel technologies in agriculture, healthcare and other industries.
