The Medical Research Council has promised a further £20 million for research into how biology, environment, culture, cognition and early life experiences contribute to mental health disorders.
The programme has been launched alongside the research council’s new mental health and wellbeing strategy, which aims to provide further insight into mental health and to develop novel treatments for the prevention of, and early intervention in, mental health disorders, the council said on 21 April.
Allocated over five years, the £20m will support research that deepens understanding of important influences underpinning the development of mental illness.
