Samantha Barrell, a former GP, has been named as the next chief operating officer at the Francis Crick Institute in London.

Barrell, the chief executive of the Taunton and Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, will take over from David Roblin at the Crick this autumn. Roblin is leaving to work for Summit Therapeutics, a biotechnology company linked to the University of Oxford.

Barrell originally trained as an anaesthetist and worked as a GP before entering healthcare management.
