British Geological Survey appoints first chairman

Keith O’Nions, the former president of Imperial College, is to become the first chairman of the British Geological Survey with immediate effect.

O’Nions has chaired Cambridge Enterprise, the University of Cambridge technology transfer body, since 2014 and was the president and rector of Imperial College until September 2014. BGS announced his appointment on 28 September.

His other previous roles include head of Earth sciences at the University of Oxford; professor of geology at Columbia University in the United States and Royal Society research professor at the University of Cambridge. Between 1995 and 2005, O’Nions also served on the board of the Natural History Museum.
