Grants line is ‘starved’, says leading astronomer

Astronomers are calling for an increase in research grant funding, as they face up to the possible loss of cash from the European Union and a legacy of flat cash settlements for their funding council.

“The grants line is now so starved that an average academic would only secure postdoctoral funding about three times in a career. That’s obviously not sustainable,” Stephen Serjeant, chair of the Science and Technology Facilities Council’s astronomy advisory panel, told Research Fortnight.

Serjeant is co-author of a paper published in the Astronomy and Geophysics journal on 1 April. The paper reported the results of a survey asking 293 astronomers what they wanted from the STFC.
