Ottoline Leyser’s first day as the head of the UK’s largest public funder of research wasn’t remotely how she had imagined it would be.

When Leyser took over as chief executive of the £8 billion-a-year UK Research and Innovation at a “frenetically busy time” at the end of June, going into the office wasn’t an option because of Covid-19 restrictions.
