REF costs ballooned in 2021

Total price tag of last Research Excellence Framework was nearly half a billion pounds

Universities and research institutes spent significantly more on taking part in the last Research Excellence Framework than they did on the previous iteration of the huge assessment exercise, a report has shown.

The overall cost for higher education institutions reached £430 million for REF 2021, up from £237m in 2014—a rise of more than 80 per cent. Part of this rise was due to an increase in the number of staff taking part, while changes in costing methodologies may also have played a role.
