The 1994 Group of smaller research-intensive universities has announced that Michael Farthing, vice-chancellor of the University of Sussex, is to be its new chairman. He will take up the role in October, replacing Lancaster University’s head, Paul Wellings, who is leaving to take up a position in Australia.
