Twelve leading US research universities are in advanced negotiations with commercial email providers to outsource the handling of sensitive data to cloud platforms, Inside Higher Ed reported on 15 August.
Diverse concerns regarding data security, compliance with legislation, liability in the event of a security breach and the location of the servers have slowed progress in the talks, but Tracey Futhey, Duke University’s CIO and a negotiator for the university group, has expressed her belief that discussions are “in the closing period”.
