Universities welcome work route for international PhD students

University groups have welcomed an announcement by home secretary Theresa May that international PhD students will be allowed to stay in the UK to work for a year after they have completed their PhD.

The announcement, in a speech by May on 12 December, was applauded by Wendy Piatt, director general of the Russell Group of large, research-intensive universities. “These students are some of the very brightest in the world who have spent years acquiring valuable qualifications and skills which we need for growth,” said Piatt in a statement.
