Willetts announces Edinburgh supercomputer upgrades

Universities minister David Willetts has announced twin upgrades to supercomputers at the University of Edinburgh that serve UK university researchers in all disciplines.

BlueGene/Q, an IBM supercomputer supported by the Science and Technology Facilities Council, and HECToR, a Cray machine paid for by several of the UK research councils, are each being upgraded with cash provided by the government under an E-infrastructure initiative, announced last autumn. Upgrading BlueGene/Q will cost £6 million and the work on HECToR will cost £13.9m.
