State-educated students less likely to go to top universities

Only 26 per cent of state-educated A-level students progress into the most selective higher education institutions, compared with 65 per cent from independent schools or colleges, according to a report by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.

The 9 August report on widening participation in HE analysed 2009-10 figures for 19-year-olds entering higher education. It defines the ‘most selective institutions’ as those in the top third of HEIs when ranked by their entrants’ top three A-level grades.
