The UK has fewer universities than China in the top global 500 for the first time, according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities, known as the Shanghai ranking.
Released on 15 August, the tables show China, including Hong Kong and Taiwan, with 42 universities in the top 500, compared to the UK’s 38.
