‘Too early’ to judge UCAS application stats

It is too early to draw conclusions from figures released by UCAS on 3 January showing a decline in the number of university applicants from the same period last year, the government and mission groups have said.

The UCAS figures cover the number of people who had applied to study at university in 2013 by 17 December 2012. This is under one month before the application window closes on 15 January. The number of applicants has fallen 5.6 per cent from the previous year. The percentage drop is highest in Wales, at 11.7 per cent. In England, it is 6.5 per cent and, in Scotland, 3.9 per cent.
