Funding council supports open-access pilot for books

The Higher Education Funding Council for England has announced it is providing up to £50,000 to support a project for making monographs freely available through cost-sharing by libraries.

The Knowledge Unlatched project aims to make academic books available online as free downloadable PDFs. The idea is that participating libraries share the cost of ‘unlatching’ a book. That cost is fixed and based on the costs of a book’s publication, meaning the individual participation fee would go down as more libraries join the scheme.

HEFCE’s contribution is intended to reduce the cost for institutions to participate in the project by up to half.
