Imperial launches cybersecurity protection institute

Imperial College London has launched an institute to look into the electronic systems that control energy distribution, manufacturing, and national rail networks.

One of the primary tasks for researchers at the Research Institute into Trustworthy Industrial Control Systems, announced on 12 December, will be to look at how to improve the protection of this infrastructure.

“Our industrial control systems are vital for running most of the industrial processes that underpin modern society,” said institute director Chris Hankin. “From electricity generation to making sure trains run on time, these systems are vital to our everyday lives, but more work needs to be done to determine how vulnerable they are to threats from cyberattacks.”
