Shadow business secretary ‘horrified’ by gender-segregation guidance

Labour's shadow business secretary Chuka Umunna has said he was “horrified” by comments from the chief executive of vice-chancellors' group Universities UK defending guidance that says universities should feel able to segregate by gender at events held on campus.

Speaking in an interview on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme on 12 December, Umunna said “segregation in our universities…offends basic norms in our society”.

“Universities are publicly funded places of research, learning and teaching. There is no place for state-sponsored segregation,” he said.
