Southampton names geographer as pro vice-chancellor for research

The University of Southampton has appointed Judith Petts, a geographer and dean of the university’s Faculty of Social and Human Sciences, as its pro vice-chancellor for research and enterprise.

The university announced the appointment on 3 December. Petts has previous experience as pro vice-chancellor for research and knowledge transfer at the University of Birmingham. She takes over from Philip Nelson who has been at the helm since 2005.

Don Nutbeam, the university’s vice-chancellor, says Petts was chosen for her experience in “supporting our world leading researchers, developing the next generation of scholars, and building on our strong history of business collaboration and knowledge transfer.”
