Union states opposition to gender segregation

The University and College Union has said that it opposes gender segregation at universities, furthering the backlash against recent Universities UK guidance supporting it under some circumstances.

The general secretary of the union, Sally Hunt, said: “UCU believes that freedom of speech; expression and association are vital parts of campus life. Universities, as public spaces, have a responsibility to all their staff and students in this regard and we do not believe that there should be enforced segregation at academic events or talks that take place on university premises.”

Yesterday, speaking on the Today Programme on BBC Radio 4, chief executive of Universities UK, Nicola Dandridge, defended the guidance issued on the basis of legal advice received.
