Closer collaboration between universities and industry is needed, if higher education projects funded by European structural funds for 2014-20 are to have an impact on regional jobs and growth, says Higher Education Wales, the umbrella body for Welsh vice-chancellors.
Responding to a consultation by the Welsh government on post-2013 structural funds, HEW says that future European programmes in Wales need to support the growth of research teams and clusters, and should do this with a stronger focus on working with businesses.
HEW also recommends the creation of new centres of research excellence, in order to benefit Wales’s regional economy.
