Walport opens York bioscience building

Mark Walport, the government chief scientific adviser, has formally opened a bioscience laboratory and computing facility at the University of York.

The building, which cost £7.5 million, is a joint initiative between the university and Hull York Medical School. It contains teaching laboratories, digital learning facilities and meeting areas. Completion of the building in August marked the end of the first phase of a planned redevelopment of the University of York’s department of biology.

Before the opening ceremony on 9 December, Walport gave a talk to invited guests on the role of research and science advice in Whitehall and beyond.
