Russell Group signs global research manifesto

The Russell Group of research-intensive universities in the UK has signed a statement agreeing to protect the "10 characteristics of contemporary research universities".

The Hefei statement, named after the city in China where it was first signed, lists characteristics including the pursuit of excellence, a commitment to research training and the right of universities to set priorities on academic grounds.

The statement was first published in October and is aimed at identifying common problems faced by research-intensive universities. Other signatories include major university associations such as the League of European Research Universities, the Association of American Universities, the C9 consortium of Chinese universities and the Group of Eight in Australia.
