The Daily Mail has apologised for wrongly claiming that the work on the origins of the universe that was recently discussed on the BBC's Newsnight programme was carried out by "white, male" scientists.
On 28 March, the Daily Mail published the following note in its section for clarifications and corrections: “An item in the Ephraim Hardcastle column on 19 March wrongly said the ‘Big Bang’ breakthrough from the BICEP2 study was compiled by white, male, American scientists. We are happy to clarify that the study, led by Harvard University professor John Kovac, was conducted by a diverse team of astronomers from around the world and we apologise for any suggestion to the contrary.”
Hardcastle had written that “two women were invited to comment on the report about (white, male) American scientists who’ve detected the origins of the universe—giggling Sky at Night presenter Maggie Aderin-Pocock and Sri Lanka-born astronomer Hiranya Peiris”.
