Labour expected to commit to lower tuition fees

The Labour party would reduce university tuition fees if it came to power in 2015, according to media reports.

The Guardian reported on 30 March that a promise to reduce fees from £9,000 a year to a maximum of £6,000 would be included in the party’s election manifesto. The party is also considering introducing a graduate tax, the article said.

Meanwhile, a report in The Times published on 31 March says that university vice-chancellors are warning that the proposed fee reduction would leave universities with a £1.7 billion deficit.
