University communication network under attack

The Janet network, which has more than 18 million users in UK research and higher education institutes, has been experiencing a “targeted and sustained” cyber attack.

The Janet Network—which is operated by the UK’s higher education ICT agency Jisc—came under a series of distributed denial-of-service attacks on 8 December. A Jisc spokeswoman said the problem had not been resolved at the time this article was published.

A statement from Jisc said that the attacks have resulted in “reduced connectivity and disruption for all Janet customers”. Jisc said that it believed its public announcements on the attacks on Twitter may have been used to inform further attacks. As such, it said it would reduce its number of Twitter updates. The Jisc website has also been temporarily closed.
