The Higher Education Funding Council for England has said that it cannot presume that extra funding for specialist higher education providers will be a priority for a future government and it will ask institutions to prove that they are “world leading” in order to remain eligible.
In a letter sent to vice-chancellors and principals of UK higher education institutions on 24 March, HEFCE requested feedback on the review of the allocation process for its institution-specific funding.
The review panel is being chaired by Christopher Frayling, chancellor of the Arts University Bournemouth and former rector of the Royal College of Art, and its proposals for changing the process will be finalised in May and introduced for the 2016-17 funding round.
