Union calls for transparency on vice-chancellors’ pay

The University and College Union has called for staff and students to be present at remuneration committee meetings, and for the minutes of such meetings to be made publicly available, along with the reasoning for pay increases.

In the report Transparency at the Top? Senior pay and perks in UK universities, the UCU also calls for the annual publication of the pay and benefits of vice-chancellors at publicly funded institutions.

The report relates the results of freedom information requests made by the UCU about the remuneration of university vice-chancellors. One in six universities refused to respond, and those that did revealed that in 2013-14 the average vice-chancellor earned £260,290—six times more than the university staff average.
