University loses licence to sponsor visas

Buckinghamshire New University can no longer sponsor visa applications for international students or employees, after exceeding a government threshold for application refusals.

The university has lost its licence to sponsor Tier 2 and Tier 4 visas with immediate effect, the Home Office announced on 9 March. The Home Office said that 21.16 per cent of Buckinghamshire-sponsored visas had been refused, 1.16 per cent higher than allowed by the applicable threshold of 20 per cent. The university now has 20 days in which to demonstrate flaws in the decision.

In November 2014 the Home Office reduced the refusal threshold for new applicants to 10 per cent, but this lower threshold did not apply to Buckinghamshire as its application for licence renewal was made in October 2014.
