Tories promise students ‘power and choice’

David Willetts’ legacy is apparent in government plans to use competition to further reform UK higher education.

Higher education under a Conservative government is likely to look much the same as under the previous coalition, with more power and choice going to students, says Alison Goddard, editor of HE.

Popular universities and popular courses will be allowed to expand while those that are struggling to attract students would shrink, as the government presses ahead with its plan to permanently remove the limit on the number of undergraduates who can study in England.
