The School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, will investigate allegations of gender-based violence when a victim decides not to report an incident to the police, the institution’s director has said.
In a blogpost published by The Guardian on 5 January, Valerie Amos promised to work to ensure that her institution was “at the forefront” of the drive to eliminate harassment.
She pledged to investigate allegations of gender-based violence in clearly defined circumstances—“rather than simply saying that they are a matter for the police to deal with”. The institution will also impose “proportionate and appropriate sanctions” in cases of serious misconduct, Amos said.
