Academics need to consider the long-term risks associated with an obsession with performance that focuses on journal impact factors, a report has said.
The Value of Structural Diversity report, from Digital Science and the Science Policy Research Unit at the University of Sussex, says that there are a number of limitations of “an obsession with performance”.
Instead, it calls for more consideration of structural diversity in research, which refers to ensuring that countries have a wide breadth of research fields, funding structures and research organisations. The report says that the topic has been “overlooked and under-researched” because it is “a tricky concept to turn into a hard definition, and even trickier to quantify”.
