The Higher Education Funding Council for England says that financial forecasts for higher education institutions in England predict a widening gap between thriving and struggling institutions.
The Financial Health of the Higher Education Sector: 2015-16 to 2018-19 forecasts report was published by HEFCE on 10 November. The report says that while institutions are at present in a financially sound position overall, in future declining cash levels and increased borrowing threaten sustainability.
The financial forecasts to 2018-19 show an increasing variation in projected performance between the lowest and highest-performing institutions, HEFCE said. Borrowing levels are expected to exceed liquidity for the first time in July 2019; creating a gap of £3.9 billion, which HEFCE said was “not sustainable in the long term”.
