HEFCE fund to create thousands of degree apprenticeships

English universities have been awarded £4.5 million from the Higher Education Funding Council for England to develop 5,200 degree apprenticeships starting in September 2017.

Around 70 bids were submitted to develop the apprenticeships, but just 18 were chosen for funding in the first round of a two-year programme.

The successful institutions were mostly modern universities teaching construction, cybersecurity, engineering, project management and nursing. They will be expected to work with employers to develop the apprenticeships, which will combine university study with paid work.
