One of the UK’s largest university mission groups has urged the government to double what it spends on research.
In a submission to chancellor Philip Hammond, ahead of the government’s autumn statement on 23 November, the MillionPlus association of teaching-led universities said that the government must increase its investment in R&D so that overall UK research funding is equal to 2.5 per cent of the country’s GDP.
The UK at present spends 1.8 per cent of its GDP on R&D, of which, less than half comes from public sources.
