Rumours of privatisation heard at St Andrews

Sources at the University of St Andrews have said that privatisation is “on the table” as part of a review of funding options in the light of Brexit, The Times newspaper reports.

In her first address after becoming principal of the university on 29 November, Sally Mapstone (pictured), said that it was her responsibility to consider “all credible funding options” in the light of the uncertainties, caused by Brexit, about future research funding and the UK’s ability to attract overseas students.

One implication of privatisation would be that the university would have fewer formal ties with the Scottish government.
