Javid summons university leaders over diversity data

Business secretary Sajid Javid has called a meeting of university leaders following a government announcement that they will be required to publish admissions and student retention data, by gender, ethnic background and socioeconomic class.

In an announcement on 31 January, David Cameron, the prime minister, said that too many prospective students were “held back—often invisibly—because of their background or the colour of their skin”.

The government said that universities would have to publish data on applications, entry and retention in certain disciplines. This information will be available to prospective students to help inform their decisions.
