UK losses in Horizon 2020 most severe for collaborative grants

The drop in the UK’s share of European Union funding for research and innovation has been steepest in the more collaborative parts of the Framework programme, an analysis by Research Fortnight has found.

The UK’s share of the funding allocated through the Societal Challenges pillar of Horizon 2020, in which collaborative projects must involve at least three organisations from three countries, has decreased from 15.4 per cent in 2015 to 10.1 per cent so far in 2017, according to EU data. This is a drop of 34.3 per cent.

Similarly, in the Industrial Leadership pillar, the UK’s share decreased from 11.3 per cent in 2015 to 7.8 per cent so far in 2017, a drop of 30.5 per cent.
