Universities start year with onslaught against no-deal Brexit

Groups representing universities of all types have issued a rare joint letter warning that a no-deal Brexit is “one of the biggest threats” they have ever encountered.

As government preparations for a no-deal Brexit step up amid fears a chaotic exit is increasingly likely, the groups warn that “Our 50,000 EU staff and 130,000 EU students, not to mention the 15,000 UK students studying in Europe, are starting the New Year facing significant uncertainty about their futures.”

The letter, sent to MPs on 4 January, has attracted huge media attention and is backed by the vice-chancellors’ group Universities UK (UUK); the Russell Group of larger, research-intensive universities; the GuildHE group of small and specialist higher-education institutions; the MillionPlus group of teaching-led universities; and the University Alliance group of business-focused universities.
