Vice-chancellors and scholars call for protection of academic freedom and research from overseas threats

Vice-chancellors and researchers have told universities they must do more to guard against growing threats to academic freedom posed by international partnerships, as the UK’s spy chief voiced his own concerns.

Ken McCallum, incoming chief of the MI5 spy agency, said the UK faced more severe and complex threats from foreign interference, including in academic research and Covid-19 vaccine work.
